Sedgwick Houses is a NYCHA public housing built in 1950. The 16.2-acre site comprises seven mid-rise buildings offering one to three-bedroom affordable apartments for low-income families.
Sedgwick Houses are more than just residences—they’re a cornerstone of cultural history. At 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, on August 11, 1973, DJ Kool Herc hosted a back-to-school party that changed music forever.
It was there he introduced the breakbeat style, laying the foundation for what would become Hip-hop culture.
This iconic event is widely recognized as the birth of Hip-Hop—earning Sedgwick the title of the
“Bethlehem of Hip-Hop”—and remains a powerful symbol of creativity, community, and cultural expression.
The Sedgwick Resident Council is building on a proud legacy of community care and empowerment.
Their ongoing work—including transforming the former preschool into a state-of-the-art training center, cultivating the community garden, leading the Women’s Support Group, and organizing essential back-to-school and food distribution events—continues to create a nurturing, resilient environment for all.
Through these efforts, Sedgwick is more than just a place to live—it is a vibrant, culturally rich community, deeply rooted in history and growing stronger through unity and love.
Sedgwick Resident Council, Inc. is committed to empowering individuals and families while strengthening the fabric of our community. We believe every person deserves to be seen, supported, and connected to the resources that can elevate their quality of life. Through advocacy, access, and collective action, we strive to build a more inclusive, resilient, and thriving Sedgwick for all.
Sedgwick Houses has secured funding to launch a new state-of-the-art training center for the local community, known as the Renaissance Project. Construction is already underway, and there’s a growing sense of excitement among residents about the opportunities this initiative will bring. Once completed, the facility is expected to provide valuable resources, skill-building programs, and pathways to employment—empowering individuals and strengthening the entire neighborhood.
The Women’s Community Circle is a powerful new initiative designed to create a safe, supportive space where women come together to share, heal, and grow. Through open dialogue, mutual support, and the sharing of collective wisdom, the Circle empowers women to navigate life’s challenges, celebrate their strengths, and build deep, meaningful connections.
This space is about more than conversation—it's about transformation. By uplifting one another, women are encouraged to thrive both as individuals and as leaders within their families and communities.
Meetings are held once a month, offering a consistent and welcoming environment for connection, empowerment, and growth.
The Sedgwick Community Garden is thriving once again—bringing new life, fresh food, and renewed connection to the neighborhood. More than just a place to grow fruits and vegetables, the garden serves as a vibrant community hub where residents come together to learn about healthy living, share knowledge, and cultivate lasting relationships.
It’s a space of growth, healing, and unity—nourishing not only the body, but also the spirit of our community and the roots that hold us together.
Sedgwick Resident Council organizes a variety of community events throughout the year, From Back-to-Schools events to fun and educational activities. These events are designed to promote community engagement and build stronger, more connected neighborhoods.
Sedgwick Day has been a proud tradition for over 50 years, bringing together past residents and current families. Under the leadership of the Resident Council, what began as a neighborhood reunion has grown into a major celebration—now featuring celebrity appearances, local leaders, and elected officials who join us in honoring the strength and legacy of our community.
At our annual Sedgwick Community Day, we honor those who uplift and inspire—leaders whose dedication continues to shape Sedgwick as a place of hope, connection, and resilience.
This year, we proudly recognized public servants including U.S. Representative Ritchie Torres, Assemblymember Latoya Joyner, Borough President Vanessa Gibson, District Attorney Darcel Clark, Assemblymember Landon Dais, and Council Member Pierina Sanchez.
Their commitment reflects the spirit of Sedgwick—united, strong, and deeply rooted in community.
